The Power of a To-Do List

by | May 5, 2021

My life is run by to-do lists. I always have several on the go, whether they be for various clients or my personal life. To-do lists keep my life in order and I would be lost without them.

To-do lists are especially great for people who get overwhelmed easily, as they can move what’s on their minds onto a piece of paper. Our minds are amazing things, but not the best place to store our tasks. Those with trouble staying focused may also see a benefit in keeping a to-do list so they can stay on track and keep organized. There is also a stronger feeling of accomplishment as tasks are completed, which can create a sense of meaning and purpose for many people.

I once read that if you have a lengthy list of things to do start with all the items that take two minutes or less. That way you cross off a bunch of stuff right away and get that sense of productivity that will motivate you to move down the rest of the list. This probably makes sense to you if you’re the type of person that thrives on meeting small goals.

Effective to-do list writing is not that hard. Here are a few of my personal tips:

1. Keep it manageable

Don’t bite off more than you can chew. If you don’t think you can complete everything in one day, don’t try and burn yourself out. Spread out your tasks evenly throughout the week.

2. Add Structure

Some items on your list will be a higher priority. Don’t let important tasks get lost and go uncompleted.

3. Be Specific

Keep your tasks concise. The last thing you want is an agenda full of scribbles and arrows drawn down the side to that last bit of room in the corner.

4. Use an actual agenda or calendar

This one goes without saying. What even is a to-do list without deadlines? To know exactly what needs to be done and by when, use an agenda or some type of calendar to schedule your tasks across the week, month, or year if you like to get ahead like me.

5. Find the best format for you

Everyone has a preference, some like a digital calendar on their phone; while others are more traditional and prefer a physical agenda to actually cross off completed tasks. Perhaps a whiteboard or desk calendar is more your style.

6. Allocate some time for yourself

Make sure you take some time for yourself! After a busy day, it’s important to unwind and destress. If you want to do a face mask or foot soak on the weekend, go ahead and add it to your calendar. If it’s on the list you must do it, right?
